Mrs. Doris Hess Ortman Doris was born and raised in Lancaster County, PA. She began piano studies at the age of five and became active in the music programs in her church as well as the high school she attended.
She graduated from West Chester in 1968 and began teaching elementary music in Penn Manor School District. In 1969, she married Terry Ortman, and they moved to New Holland, PA, where she was organist and director of four choirs at their church.
She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1977 and she retired from teaching in 1979. Doris and Terry moved to Chambersburg, PA, to become full-time missionaries with Camp Joy El, serving there until 2004. While there, she directed the ministry’s teen choir “The Living Miracles” for ten years, and was instrumental in the formation of the senior citizen choir, “The J.O.Y. (Just Older Youth) Chorale,” which she continues to direct.
She also sings, speaks, and plays the piano for retreats, conferences, women’s groups and churches. Doris has two recording, “In God’s Time” and “Holy Ground.
