Dr. Sam and Elaine Harbin
Sam is a native “Hoosier” born in Martinsville, Indiana and was nurtured in a loving Christian home where he is the oldest of four children. Sam came to faith in Christ at the age of six through the influence of his father. Elaine was born in Rockford, Illinois and grew up in a pastor’s home the youngest of three. She also came to faith in Christ as a young child. Sam and Elaine joined their lives in June of 1982.
Sam graduated from Indiana Baptist College, Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary of Lansdale, and Dallas Theological Seminary. His doctoral work focused on preaching Old Testament narratives. Elaine has always been a musician and pursued that love by majoring in vocal pedagogy, graduating from Tennessee Temple University.
After leaving seminary, Sam and Elaine joined the ministry team of Suburban Baptist Church in Indiana. Sam served in various roles, first as an assistant pastor and later as the senior pastor. In addition to cheerfully playing her “pastor’s wife” role, Elaine was active in the music ministry within the church and school. They welcomed three sons into their lives while serving in Indiana. Justin, Jared and Jordan. They have also welcomed two grandchildren, Jackson and Eden. The Harbins returned to Calvary Baptist Seminary in 1995 where Sam served as Chaplain and Professor of Pastoral Theology. Elaine continued her active music ministry serving as head of the music department in Calvary Baptist School (pre-K-12), and also served as a member of the “Music and Media” worship team for Calvary Baptist Church. Sam served as president of the seminary from 2006-2014.
In July, 2014, Sam became chair of the Bible and Theology department at Lancaster Bible College, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Sam enjoys basketball (remember, he’s from Indiana), hunting, woodworking, playing stringed instruments (guitar, dulcimer, mandolin) on which he accompanies Elaine’s beautiful soprano voice. Elaine enjoys being in full-time ministry and being a homemaker. Currently, she is planning to open a music studio from their home in Manheim, Pennsylvania. Sam and Elaine enjoy the many opportunities God gives them to minister in churches, camps, and conferences.
